The evening was opened by Mr Peter Jennings, Executive Director of ASPI, who provided some brief welcoming remarks. Mr Tony Windever, Vice President & General Manager - Asia Pacific & Japan of Unisys, then discussed the growing importance of border security in today’s world and introduced Minister Dutton.
The Minister reflected on the important role of border and immigration control plays in maintaining Australia’s security, specifically within the context of the increased movement of people around the world in the past few years. He highlighted the success of the Government’s current immigration policies and stated that these policies would not be changing in the near future.
The Minister also highlighted some areas of Australia’s immigration policies that needed reform, including the complexity of its visa system and ageing infrastructure. He stated that the Government will be announcing its plans for the future of the Department of Immigration and Border Protection in the coming months.
The event closed with an engaging Q&A session with the Minister, moderated by Mr Peter Jennings. Enquiries touched on the issues facing immigrant integration, the lessons Australia was taking from Germany’s recent experience with immigrant integration, and what distinguishes the Australia’s current policies from similar policies from the Howard government. After the discussion, speakers and guests enjoyed drinks and canapés.
