China and climate change: Risks, opportunities and regional security dimensions

Speakers Professor Xu Yi-Chong, Anastasia Kapetas, Genevieve Donnellon-May and Robert Glasser

China is a major power with a significant role in the global energy transformation and also a serious exposure to climate hazards. Yet there is surprisingly little analysis of the impacts of climate change on China and its policies.

To help fill this gap, ASPI’s Climate and Security Policy Centre (CSPC), in partnership with the KAS Regional Programme Australia and the Pacific (KAS), is pleased to invite you to the special event ‘China and climate change: Risks, opportunities and regional security dimensions’.

The event will focus on the growing role of climate change in China’s economic, foreign and security policies, including the impacts on the Indo-Pacific region and the potential for further regional instability.

We will discuss the challenges China faces in managing domestic climate change impacts, China’s energy transition; and the implications for regional peace and security. The discussions will draw-upon three new ASPI publications that survey the various dimensions of these topics and will engage experts to elaborate on the findings.

Dr Robert Glasser, Head of ASPI's Climate and Security Policy Centre, will lead a discussion alongside report authors Professor Xu Yi-Chong (Griffith University) and Anastasia Kapetas (Australian National University), as well as guest expert Genevieve Donnellon-May (Oxford Global Society), on the findings of these new publications that survey the various dimensions of these topics, and elaborating on findings. Director of the KAS Regional Programme Australia and the Pacific Mr Bertil Wenger, will provide closing remarks at the event's conclusion, outlining a summary of the discussion and the importance of the work.

Please note this is a hybrid event with the opportunity to attend in person or online. For guests attending in person, the event will be followed by a reception.
